Favorite Things Series [2] – Skin Care Edition

Welcome to my Favorite Things blog series! If you missed the first post, check it out here –> Favorite Things [1] – Beach Edition

My second post is completely about my skin care favorites. I’m by no means the BEST person to talk to about skin care but always have had great routines and quick fixes for my skin care. And great skincare should be a favorite thing for everyone!

1. Healthy Diet

First and foremost, great skin starts with having a healthy, balanced diet. You’ll have some skin issues in your future if you’re always eating fried food and sugary treats. Of course, I still indulge at times but great skin comes from being smart about your diet always. I eat a pescatarian-based diet with lots of veggies, beans, and fish. On occasion I will enjoy pizza, french fries, and ice cream but in moderation with healthier options replacing original favorites.  Now if only there was a satisfying substitution for beer!

Juicing

Although I do not currently have a juicer on the sailboat, I LOVE making fresh juice!  Juicing helps to detoxify your body and provides a large amount of nutrients for staying alert, strengthening your immune system, increases energy, and helps with weight loss. It is exceptional for making your skin feel great and anti-aging defense. Here is a great recipe to try for bright, beautiful skin!

Refreshing Green Juice Recipe for Bright, Beautiful Skin

  • 3 de-stemmed kale leaves
  • 1 apple
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 1/3 cucumber
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • handful of ice
Wash and chop all your produce (always!) and add the ingredients to your juicing option. This recipe is actually best made in a blender so that you don’t miss out on any of the fibrous veggie nutrients. Blend until smooth and enjoy! Makes 1-2 servings.

2. Exercise

Obviously exercise is a great way to stay fit, look healthy, and strengthen your immune system. If you’re able to exercise for 20 minutes a day, you’re also in good form to have great skin. Staying active will help nourish skin cells, detoxify your pores, and healthy circulation will keep your skin bright and clear. I really enjoy working out and staying active but never really have a gym nearby. My favorite ways to exercise are doing yoga, kayaking, biking, hiking, and of course sailing. All of which are great ways of staying active. I have many favorite workouts and only a limited of items to use while on the sailboat. Here are a few of my favorite portable pieces of exercise equipment from Gaiam

3. Sleep

Your beauty sleep is a great way to keep your skin glowing. Blood flow is increased while you snooze so it is important to make sure you have around eight hours of restful sleep each night. When I wake up with less than six hours of sleep, I am not only crabby but also have dull skin. Here are a few items I use to help me have a restful sleep each night.

4. Drink Water

When you drink water, you are replenishing your body and helping to flush out harmful toxins.  It is recommended to drink at least 8 cups of water each day but each person is different and typically require more. If you want healthy skin, you should set your minimum at 8 cups but strive for more in warmer climates and an extra cup per caffeinated/alcoholic beverage you consume. This will help to prevent dehydration and keep your body functioning properly. Water makes up 60% of your body weight while skin is the largest organ on your body. Therefore drinking water is crucial for your skin to stay healthy.

5. Skin Care Products

I have so many favorite skin care products but these are my go-to options. I’m always a fan of trying new things but these are definitely tried and true for my skin type.

Final Thoughts

Great skin takes a bit of work so it’s important you put together a routine starting as early as possible. These are my favorite things in regards to skin care but know there are multiple other products that I use in addition to the above ones I’ve listed. There are many trends that I am interested in trying and try to stay as natural as possible with the ingredients I am using. It’s an industry that will never die out and I’m always a fan of trying out new products to keep my skin looking bright and rejuvenated. There are many trends that I am interested in trying and try to stay as natural as possible with the ingredients I am using. Current trends are products with mushroom oils and snail slime but I think it’s most important to focus on a healthy diet, exercise, sleep, and lots of water.

If you have other personal favorites products to share, please let me know in a comment below!

Cheers and thanks for reading!
